Pic Lens - add on to Mozilla Firefox...

Just discovered a brilliant add-on to the Mozilla Firefox browser - called Pic Lens it's a wee tiny button at that gets loaded to the top of your toolbars and if you launch it you get to browse Flickr, Google, Yahoo, Photobucket etc on a lovely gentle black background all the images you can imagine...at the bottom of the screen are a series of dots which if you put your cursor over them tyou can swing the wall of images across the screen and more appear in a never ending wall of images of your search parameters, seamlessly refreshed and added toas you go...a good way to view images instead of clicking through many pages...cool stuff. I'm a fan.

Yesterday i did a Tafe short course in Travel Writing -really good fun and very interesting and helpful. until now I couldn't really think of a good application for me for flow charts, but now i think i might be able to apply them to writing a travel article and planning it and how it flows and links within itself...when I've written one I'll let you know....Scully

Hmmmm....thought this one was a bit useless - well to me anyway. I created a page of mini widgets - calendar, link to Flickr, to do list, etc but they just get in the way for me. Besides, on my Browser toolbar (above & below) i have all the sites & programs I use all the time on the toolbars as links anyway - so i only have to click them once and i'm where I want to be or in the program i want to be. The widgets are just distractions really - well, to me ....so I'm not going to use this element of web 2.0 thank you very much! Scully

Well, I've just created a daggy little newsletter of photos (wasn't in a text mood) on Letterpop! not a bad idea to have available at all...i can think of an immediate use - My mum is President of her golf club and has to do a monthly newsletter - so I'll show it to her and get her to have a fiddle too and see if she can't liven up her monthly attempts. Just converted a file using the online file conversion site Zamzar.com and it is SOOOO helpful for our problematic public pc user's who bring in all sorts of weird file extension files that just don't want to open, be recognised, print on our systems. So thank you Oh Higher Being for providing us with Zamzar. Yay!!! I love Web 2.0! (However it did take a little bit of time, for the converted file to arrive in my inbox...but only a teeny weeny criticism.) Scully

I've been doing a few other Things whilst I wait for the files to come through and now 15mins on still not here....bit of a disappointment.

Thing #27 Photobucket vs Flickr

Just joined Photobucket too - apparently it's in competition to Flickr (which is my preferred photo site - i've just joined as a pro member for more space and options). Thing that mainly grabbed me as a turn off for Photobucket is that you can upload ANYONE's images whereas on Flickr you must only upload your own images - which i think is the way to go. However, having said that you can upload moving images and make slideshows/movies even go on to the world of avatars and second lives etc. Not my cup of tea really. It's a bit like a You Tube/my space hybrid. And as I don't have a My Space site and don't really want one I suppose I'm missing the point. I hope that means no-one can upload MY images without my say-so....hmmmm.... I did have a play with the search section to find images and clips of things like David Tennant (Dr Who) etc. So not really that different from You Tube except it had stills AND videos. Scully
The other annoying thing about it is all the advertising on it ...real turn off. Oh, I created an album with some things in it as instructed which now relates to Thing #28 apparantly.

Joined a fabulous website called Red Bubble (www.redbubble.com) where you upload stories, images for t-shirts, art, poetry, photos - all your BEST work. You can then opt to make your art available to sell and they do all the selling/packaging etc for you. it's basically a gallery for you and of your art. so I've posted my favourite image in the highest resolution possible and made it avail to sell and I've already been invited to join a few groups within the RedBubble network. so I'm stoked.

Thing #45 Flow Charts & mind Maps

Well, I've joined up with Mindmeister and had a bit of a play - though I didn't save anything. We have a really good book on mind maps in the library by Tony Buzan (the master) and I found that easier to follow when I did a colourful one at home on paper - more productive too- got my creative juices flowing and prompted a moment of clarity which is why I did it in the first place. So I'm not sure I'd use Mindmeister over coloured pencils and a scrapbook, but that's just the practical Scully talking.
As for FlowCharts- I'm still waiting for my email to come to invite me to set up a Flow Chart - so I'll reserve judgement on that til I have more info. Not sure how to define the difference yet between the 2, so I'll wait for now. But the demo seemed easy to follow- but it's all different when you try and do your own. Scully

Just spending the day at my folks to scum their broadband - I started a new photography course at Tafe on Tues night & our homework was to suss out the long list of web links related to lighting - so, like a good, keen student that's what i'm doing and like the web does it sends you off in a million different directions which is where i went and found some other really cool stuff like Photojojo - of which i've added a little link thingy - so suss it out... it's got really cool ideas of stuff to buy or try and DYI at home with your photos. anyway, that's a really long sentence and i need to come up for air now so i will and there it is. Scully
Oh and i've added a stack of new pics to my flickr ( which was homework as well so the other students can critique each other's work) so feel free to suss it out if you want, i've added my pics to lots of other groups as well which is cool cos it gets you to a bigger audience and nearly every other day i get an email asking if i would join another group or if I'd join their group cos they like my pics. Best thing i learned at lesson one at Tafe - Make a photograph, don't take it. I think there's something in that for everyone. Ciao for now.

Just because I now supposedly have all this time on my hands - now that I'm a casual employee of ye olde library- I now have heaps of time to do LIbrary 2.1! Yay! some more cool things from LIbraryland to sink my teeth into.

I borrowed a really really useful little book from our lib recently...good if you want to spend heaps of time on the net exploring (and double the time if you only have dial up..ugh)...it was called Your Life Online and had millions of links to interesting sites and also explained in layman's terms what a lot of the jargon meant...bit like a guide to LIbrary 2.0 and now 2.1 too. Perhaps every employee should have a copy!!

so watch this space as i tackle the next 23 things in earnest..yay!

Hi Ho Hi Ho it's off to 3 amazing cities in 3 days I go.... Sorry..sorry..sorry...

Well, 2 more sleeps and I'm off to the northern hemisphere and many different climes...I'm heading to the land of Tutenstein (my niece wants to come to Egypt with me so she can find Tutenstein from the cartoon...) to meet up withmy folks unbeknowst to them! Then off down the Nile (yes up is actually down) with 3 days on Lake Nasser and then 3 days north of the Aswan dam..and a few days in Cairo and then off to My Beloved Crete for some R&R and swimming in the Libyan Sea and some gentle hiking in My Mountains.

I've started a new blog at www.mytb.org/scullywho - it's part of the Travel Blog website which is pretty cool in itself and I'll endeavour to update my movements as I go - though I'm not sure about internet connections on the boats on the Nile or internet cafes in Egypt in general...I'll do what I can...

Needless to say I'll be well stocked up with photos when I return that will take the next year to sort...

Thank you Brighton for having me these past weeks, it's been fun.

New Rebus...

Just been to Southland to do the Medicare shuffle and after extracting myself from there I happened to scoot past ye olde A&R (Angus & Robertson) and there, lo, was a copy (mind you for $23) piles of copies of the new Ian Rankin book -Exit Music - the new and LAST of the John Rebus books...will he be killed off or retired....:( sad either way....great reads and shame he's only written about 19 books with the same character...what will we do now?!

If you haven't read them give them a try...

Oh and thank you Freeloading Phill for Torchwood tape...can't believe my last 2 attempts at taping didn't work at the crucial moments, can't wait to watch it, and i've only got 4 episodes of Firefly left...

How Cool is this....?

Well, I thought seeing as though I couldn't help be a Library 2.0 Demonstrator for the second session the other day, that I'd share with you all the "pretty good excuse" I had for not being there...and since I was under anaesthetic at the time...I had to get the photos to prove it...

Gross as they are...they're pretty cool, you have to admit...the human body is a marvellous thing...

The photo on the right is my lovely healthy shiny liver (the liver coloured bit) and my gallbladder in the middle, with an inch wide gallstone inside it, my duodenum is the white bit bottom right and the icky yellow thing is my omentum, which Ibelieve is part of my peritoneum...

Now people, the your left is the pic of my cystic duct & artery being clipped with a little titanium (I think) clip (no it won't set the security alarms off at the airport)...pretty amazing really...and true to life colours too!!

Finally, below is the finished masterpiece, Scully without her pain-in-the-chest inducing gallbladder & gallstone (with the little shiny clips!):

So after all that snipping and removing and being anaethetised I decided some serious vomiting was in order - what's that song :"the drugs don't work"...the pain meds made me sick and then the anti nausea stuff made me upchuck too...don't know bout you, but hucking your guts up after abdominal surgery is not my idea of a fun 15 hours...think my tummy was more sore from the chucking than the cutting...

So I hope you enjoyed my little tour around my innards and learnt some new vocabulary. By the way, it was all done through key-hole surgery - only 5 wee holes in my belly (to go with 4 previous ones - so now I have a mini golf course on my belly - (9 holes, geddit?)) and I'm still hanging out for a vindaloo curry...haven't got the courage up to tackle that one just yet...

Oh, one of the other bit that I thought was interesting was that when my specialist referred me to the surgeon, I assumed it was a man - my surgeon AND the assisting surgeon were both women. Funny how we've (well, I've) been conditioned to assume that...I won't be making that error again.

Sorry if this grosses you out, but I reckon it's all just absolutely amazing...how often do we get to look inside this marvel we inhabit?

Well, it's my last day at this desk before I head to my new role at a new branch, bit sad to say bye bye to the happy gang here, but so grateful for the welcome chorus of Hul-lo! every time I walk in the door and BYE when I leave, amongst other things...such willing mentors...I'm still smiling after 6 months (and a bit). I've loved it here, but look forward to just as much fun, learning and challenge in my new environment. It'll be great. Thanks to everyone at Brighton. Come visit! Thanks for sharing...

Ta dah! Library 2.0 #23 the end...what a pity

What a pity this is the last of Library 2.0 things that we have to do.
It's been really FUN and SOOO interesting and I've learned sooo much.

The main thing I realised is the benefit of broadband over dialup! No really, the exposure to really only a smidgeon of technology that is out there is really astonishing. I'm so glad i work here and got to do this. No Really!

I was trying to learn about all this stuff before I started working here and it was such a challenge, there was no coherency and little comprehension unless it had anything to do with my photos - the extra incentive for me....

Like Trevor says in his blog, 23 things isn't enough.. thank goodnessfor the other site with 43 things on it....will look into it.

Thanks Bayside Library for letting me do this. Brilliant! Such fun! Mostly useful, but overall I've caught up a bit with what's out there....a bit less daunting now. Cheers.

Love the idea of downloading a book onto an MP3 player....especially for when I'm on a plane, I get really bored and teh headphones the airlines give you really hurt your ears!

http://www.netlibrary.com/ this site is for libraries, but there are any number of other places you can get e-books, like http://www.ebooks.com/ where you can get free excerpts to see if you like the book, or you set up an account here, suss out the book you want, pay your dosh, download and skedaddle with your book. kewl.

Again, it pays to have broadband or you'll be there forever trying to download on dialup....time for an upgrade methinks.... hmmmm what book shall I choose....Art of Travel perhaps....

Just because we at Brighton are not really all that competitive, a few of us decided to polish off the remaining Library 2.0 things on the list....not to beat anyone in particular... not!

I have reread a number of the articles and comments on in the 5 Perspectives section and well, they say it all, don't they!

This whole Library 2.0 experience can only open our minds and our options for ourselves and our borrowers and, therefore, our community, even further than we thought. There are SO many resources out there, not just Google, that we need to be aware of, confident to use and as with most things in our lives we need to evolve (but how do we do it at our own pace when if we did we'd be left behind so far...a good or a bad thing, I ask?- professionally it's imperative, if none of us worked I suspect a nice cool, dim rock would be an attractive thing to crawl under - with a good book, of course.

Libraries of course are no longer just about books, we are about information and sharing it with everyone, all these technologies make that possible. I just love it!

Just had a bit of a play with You Tube - found some Crete video footage - shamelessly inadequate - mainly horrible touristy/drunk on holiday/ north coast yuk stuff... so obviously I shall have to rectify all that.

Found the whole thing of YOu Tube pretty interesting really, but as I don't have broadband at home, I fear I shall miss out a bit, so I'll have to use the 'pute at my olds...Oh well, fun fun fun.

haven't really been into Wikipedia to have a good look, not second nature to look there for stuff yet, so I had a look now and, being the Crete-o-phile that I am, I looked up Crete and was suitably impressed... so I shall endeavour to use Wikipedia a bit more. it does seem like a bottomless pit though, pretty much like the whole web is, i suppose...one really could just spend their lifetime in front of a computer and never see the sun.... I''m glad, thus, that I have My Crete - see the map that I downloaded from Wiki - the white bit on the south west part is Pachnes, 2453 metres in the White mountains - I climbed that last year. ...Breathtaking...

I only buy one magazine these days and it's a small one called Australian Netguide - for a non-techie like me I've learned SOOOO much from it, including hearing about a few of the things we are learning about on Library 2.0.... thus I have heard of some of the Online Tools mentioned in this, #18. I'm familiar with Google docs and the large number of free tools and programs that Google offers.

Been having heaps of fun with Flickr lately... I spent some time exploring Groups and seeing ones that I'd like to join, so I did - this basically exposes you to MORE people seeing YOUR photos and then inviting you to join other groups and it spirals exponentially from there. I've now been invited to join about 5 or 6 different groups, mainly relating to my Crete photos, but now also relating to my "Street Art" (grafitti in Athens) photos. I'm really quite stoked. Also some other Flickr-ites have marked some of my photos as their favourites, and I'm getting more comments every day on individual pics. Boosts the old confidence that!

have neglected my Library 2.0 blog for a bit...things on my mind...work to do...books to cover...noses to blow...

I DID get up to #15 before Easter, read all the info on it and didn't immediately blog on it, so of course, I've now forgotten what I was going to say and will have to reread all the info on it to create an hypothesis...

Anyway, I actually did our Bayside Library Podcasting class the other day and was blown away by how much stuff is out there. We learnt how to download Juice, the software, then practiced downloading, managing and listening to podcast downloads....I found the only drawback is having ye olde dialup...but my folks have broadband so I've been filling up their 'pute with stuff I want to listen to instead. Have been really impressed by what's out there, now I just need the time to listen to it all.... Don't we all....

I'm so excited! I've booked my trip! Yay!!!!

Because I am obsessed with Crete, in case you didn't all know already, I've scheduled my hols, submitted my leave application, had it approved, so now I've BOOKED IT! Yay....

I managed to scum every frequent flyer point I could to arrange my flights to Egypt first, then to Athens and Crete and back, via London, Tokyo, Sydney & Melbourne....I worked out I'll have 11 flights in total in a 1 month period. (not really happy bout that on a Green Front, but hey, I get to see some really old stuff and hike in "my mountains" again.

Those ones there!

I met my landlord today (turns out he's Greek...surprise surprise...obviously meant to get that flat) and he knows people from my favourite villages in Crete. Small world.

So I'll spend 10 days in Egypt first, then 2 weeks in Crete with a day or two in Athens, which I really enjoyed last year. I was supposed to go to Egypt from the UK in September 2001, but September 11 happened and I couldn't fly out of London, so I took a ferry and train across to Paris instead, then over to rellies in Deutschland and then flew on a whim to Athens, caught a ferry to Crete and there my love affair started. So I wasnt too disappointed then, that I missed out on Egypt, but I always planned to get backthere, and now I am. Glee Glee Glee!

This is some art painted on a dry stone wall, in, yes, Crete, that I found on a hike I did from Agia Roumeli to Agios Pavlos chapel a few kms down the beach. Next to the chapel was a run down taverna on the beach and someone had painted this image on it. I thought it was very striking and echoes the "Evil Eye" blue glass "eyes" the Greeks (and Turks) use to ward of evil/stare down evil. The chapel of Agios Pavlos is reputed to be where the Apostle Paul came ashore to preach. It is a lovely, simple unpainted chapel with frescoes inside. Once you've hiked to it, you have to hike back to Agia Roumeli reasonably promptly or camp on the beach, because the ferries leave around 4 for Sougia & Paleochora, or Hora Sfakion & Loutro. All seriously fabulous places to be.

I had to cut & paste some html stuff to make Technorati work, so I did and once I have posted this it should activate it, or something....here goes....!

I also read up on tagging - which I knew about from using Photoshop Elements at home on my photos, I tag everything so I can easily find my photos by subject if I can't remember the date - and seeing as tho' I'm scanning in my family's slide collection and 35mm negative collection I'd better have an accurate filing system...I'm up to about 14000 photos, I even had to get an external hard drive to cope with the storage.... out of control!

Also sussed out Del.icio.us...I've sussed this out before and chose to pass on it...I just thought then that I wouldn't use it...looking at it again today I thought pretty much the same thing...at some point I feel one has to say I am linked to enough sites...so today I am putting a lid on it. I may decide later to do it but not today...

Following on from the Learning 2.0 training thingy that I'm doing, I followed the prompts and learnt how to make a Trading Card using add ons, mash ups & applications and flickr tools. here is the result.

This is one of my all time favourite photos from Crete. A few trips ago I made a pact with myself to take more PEOPLE shots. This meant actually ASKING people if I could take their photo (preferably in THEIR language) . This is the result of my bravado and I'm wrapt! These fellows are very proud locals in a proud, rural area that still has fiery and brutal vendettas between villages. Guns and utes abound. But they are lovely people, especially if you are respectful, of course. It's my favourite are of Crete.

This is one of my favourite spots on Crete: - Paleochora on the South West Coast. Last October (2006) when this was taken, Greece had storms that washed cars into harbours and caused flash flooding in the gorges on Crete that I wanted to hike. This rainbow came after a massive downpour. Everyone came outside and just SAT and watched as the sky evolved to this spectacular display. No wonder I love Crete!

I learnt how to add pics to my blog today, so I thought another one of Crete wouldn't go astray! Plus, even tho' I have my own Flickr site, I am still learning more about what it can do, like linking it to my blog...I shall continue to learn more things about this "teckononical stuff" I'm sure.

I just had a bit of a "finesse" of my new site and as I already have a Flickr site I didn't have to set one up for the training programme, but what I DID do was add a link! Very proud!

So now you can view some of my photos on flickr under my user name of Scullywho. Just type in search for Scullywho, it will say not found on another window, but will give the option of searching for PEOPLE, so put me in there and it will produce my site for you and just click on it to enter.

This wasn't as smooth a process as I expected...bit of to-ing and fro-ing to get it up and running...URLs passwords, blog names, user names..... too many passwords in our lives for me. Simplify my life...please!!!

Hi All,

This is my first attempt at a blog (actually I set one up a few years ago, but can't remember what I put it under - so it's out there in the ether...somewhere....).

I'm a newby at my library and our staff have access to this brilliant FREE training programme called Learning 2.0 and finally, I am going to learn about technology that has phased me by how far ahead of me it is.

WELL! No longer am I afraid. It is "to infinity and beyond" from here!
